What is the difference between an original and a giclee print? An original monoprint is a one-of-a-kind, handmade artwork which is unique. It is produced by adding layers of artist’s quality acrylic paints on a gelatine plate, using various techniques and utensils (such as leaves, grasses and handmade stencils). A giclee print is a a high-quality reproduction of an original artwork. I work with a two award winning printing companies who scan the original and produce a copy using state of the art printers with a colour gamut of 10 pigment inks (normal photocopiers use 4). The inks and paper used is of archival quality and will last for up to 100 years.

Why should I buy a giclee print? At the start of a new series of works, I use thin paper to create a new design. It allows me to experiment, not worrying too much about wasting paper. It has the added advantage of getting a ‘feel’ of the underlying template, resulting in sharp and precise outlines. Some of my best work is produces that way. However, as it is produced on thin paper, it doesn’t lend itself for sale. Therefore, the best of these prints are scanned and I offer them as reproduction prints on thick card.

What is a ‘mount’ and do I need one?A mount is a separate cardboard border, added on top of an artwork. It makes the art stand out and looks much better when settled into a frame. The width of a mount varies and is a matter of taste and frame size. I have chosen my mounts depending on the size of my prints and the standard frame sizes available in the UK. However, you can add a different mount to the print to fit your particular frame size.

Do you offer framed prints?Currently, I don’t offer framed prints as posting them is expensive and there is the risk of breakage. However, all my prints are deliberately set up to fit into standard UK frames.
